Who we are

The Herald Fire Prevention Council (HFPC) is a nonprofit organization rooted in rural California, dedicated to protecting lives, homes, and landscapes from the growing threat of wildfire. Founded by community members, HFPC brings neighbors together to strengthen resilience, share knowledge, and take practical steps toward safety.

Our Mission: Building Total Resilience

Community (Prevention) + Agency (Response) = Community Fire Resilience

Guided by this formula, we look beyond emergency response to focus entirely on community-driven action. Our mission is to:

    • Build Resilience: Support Firewise defensible space mapping, home-hardening projects, and community-wide fuel reduction efforts.

    • Educate & Empower: Provide accessible Firewise workshops, outreach campaigns, and readiness resources for seniors, families, and diverse volunteers.

    • Foster Partnerships: Collaborate with local agencies, businesses, and volunteers to create sustainable, scalable models of Firewise community prevention.

    • Preserve Legacy: Document and share stories of Firewise community action, ensuring lessons learned today guide future generations.

What We Do

FWhat We Do

We bring our fire resilience formula to life through hands-on community projects, multi-agency coordination, and innovative campaigns like the Golden Paradox Challenge (GPC). The GPC serves as our central hub to connect residents with vital resources across all levels:

  • National Resources: We guide homeowners through federal Firewise standards and connect the community to national wildfire mitigation grants.

  • State & Local Resources: We partner directly with agencies like the CCC (California Conservation Corps) for critical boots-on-the-ground fuel reduction and clearing projects.

  • Anchor Partners: We collaborate with key regional organizations, local businesses, and agencies that provide the foundational backing for our large-scale safety initiatives.

  • Coupon & Local Business Partners: Through the GPC game, we team up with local restaurants and vendors to offer incentives, turning community fire safety assessments into a rewarding, neighborhood-wide effort.

Why It Matters

Wildfire doesn’t just threaten property—it threatens community. By working together, we can protect Herald and the surrounding Sacramento region, safeguard our rural way of life, and create a model of resilience that other communities can follow.
