The CCC Fuel Reduction Project: Precision Mitigation
Twenty years of neglected eucalyptus growth has turned 7 acres of Herald into a high-risk fuel load threatening local properties. Starting July 1, 2026, crews from the California Conservation Corps (CCC) will deploy across Herald to execute major hazard reduction along critical boundaries.
This strategic partnership does more than clear brush; it gives young California leaders hands-on experience in rural land stewardship while physically shielding our town. Safety in Herald isn’t a service you buy—it’s an investment in our collective defense.

Beyond Standard Firewise: Why We Need the CCC
Normal Firewise guidelines are built for standard residential properties. However, when properties feature severe terrain or a high-density fuel load like this eucalyptus grove, they go far beyond what a homeowner can safely mitigate on their own.
That is why our directive to the California Conservation Corps is simply to "Make it Safe." > This professional intervention addresses the complex hazards that regular clearing can't touch:
Heavy Chainsaw Operations: Safely felling massive, oily eucalyptus trees that threaten nearby structures.
Mitigating the Chimney Effect: Clearing out decades of deep "duff" and dense understory directly inside the swale to stop a fire from racing uphill.
Breaking Vertical Continuity: Pruning high into the canopy to prevent a ground fire from leaping into the treetops and crowning.
