Come have breakfast with us, and leave with a plan to save your home.
On Saturday, November 14, at 8:00 AM, we are gathering at Station 88 on Clay Station Road in Herald. Breakfast is free. We are accepting donations to keep this work going.
Our keynote speaker is Brenna Howell, coordinator for the Sacramento County Fire Safe Councils and Advisor to the Herald Fire Prevention Council. She will speak on the Community Wildfire Prevention Plan update, and on what it takes to become a Firewise community.
This matters to Herald because we live it every day. We are about 1,100 neighbors in 95638, about 35 percent seniors. We live alongside a 1,700-acre eucalyptus corridor. We have one main road out on SR-16. Our wells run near 400 feet deep. Our swales and vernal pools are not just wet ground — they are fire breaks and they feed the aquifer we drink from.
Becoming Firewise is not a certificate on a wall. It is neighbors being tenacious and intentional about prevention, every home hardened ground, and no one waiting for the fire to come. That is our mission, and Brenna will show us the next steps to get there.
This matters to Sacramento, too. Herald is not separate from Sacramento County. We are its rural edge. Fire does not stop at a city line. Smoke does not. Evacuation traffic on SR-16 does not. Water does not. What we learn here — how a small community gets organized, clears fuel, looks after its seniors, and holds the line together — is a model other Sacramento communities can use.
Together we survive, apart we burn.
If you live in Herald, come. If you live elsewhere in Sacramento County and you care about wildfire, come and see what a community doing the work looks like. Bring a neighbor, especially a senior neighbor.
